Maria Montessori (August 31, 1870 - May 6, 1952), was an Italian educator, scientist, physician, psychiatrist, philosopher, psychologist, devout Catholic, feminist, and humanist. She was interested in the education of mentally handicapped children and applied experimental methods to help these children learn to read and write. She developed her own methods which she later applied to all kinds of children.
