Maria Montessori
Maria
Montessori (August 31, 1870 - May 6, 1952), was an Italian educator, scientist,
physician, psychiatrist, philosopher, psychologist, devout Catholic, feminist,
and humanist. She was interested in the education of mentally handicapped
children and applied experimental methods to help these children learn to read
and write. She developed her own methods which she later applied to all kinds
of children.
One of the
important things she did was that she founded the Children's House and
developed there what would now be called the Montessori method of teaching. All
of her theories were based on what she observed the little ones doing on their
own, without adult supervision. Maria Montessori developed a different
pedagogical method focused on the development and social maturity of the
student instead of relying on homogeneous and standardized learning, where the
emphasis is on assessment, tests or academic courses.
I like it
because its method prepares children for the reality of life, they are not
tricked, nor bribed, it is about learning values by themselves, seeing the
natural relationship "act-consequence". The learning of all areas of
knowledge is the same, with self-corrective materials. The child learns
by himself, he is the protagonist.
